And the positive feedback from Dave’s US trip continues to roll in; further confirmation that Americans have great taste in music! The peeps from hush hush ATTACK!, a Beverly Hills-based entertainment marketing company, caught Dave’s performance at The Viper Room last week and discovered something that we’ve all known for a while – David Dallas is the shit! Hush hush ATTACK! produce a weekly newsletter featuring interesting tidbits from the entertainment industry and they selected Dave’s current single ‘Indulge Me’ as their “MP3 of the week” in this weeks issue (#112), here’s what they had to say:

Dave has just arrived in New York City after a successful stint in Austin turning heads with his showcases at SXSW. Dave’s been getting props all over and it’s great to see that an American audience can be so open-minded and accepting of the concept of ‘a rapper from New Zealand’.

In particular Chris Faraone, a Hip Hop journalist, was one of the heads that was turned. Originally from Queens, Faraone writes for the The Boston Phoenix and has written for several publications including Elemental, Spin, and The Source. Here’s what Faraone had to say about Dave’s Thursday night showcase on his Boston Phoenix SXSW blog:

Afterwards I rolled with Philly beast Icon the Mic King to the Back Alley Social Club, where I made my first big discovery of the week. New Zealand MC David Dallas – who “raises more hands than Hitler” – is someone to definitely listen for.

Dave’s spending his last day at SXSW in Austin, Texas today, he peeped a few legends yesterday, and he’s heading to New York tomorrow. Make sure to follow him on twitter to stay up to date with his progress over there.

Big shouts to everyone that have been putting in the hard yards spreading the word about “Indulge Me” online, and requesting it on TV etc, it’s been getting a lot of love! Like Dave said earlier this month radio play is important, we need to stay on them to make sure our favourite rapper is getting the play he deserves! Internationally known

I spoke to Dave briefly this morning, he’s at SXSW in Austin, Texas right now having a ball. His access to the net is not as frequent as he’s accustomed to, so he’s asked me to keep the fire burning down here while he handles bizzo in the US.

The “Indulge Me” video has had the “internet going nuts“ (© Paul Wall) and has been popping up on websites and blogs all over the show, not just here in New Zealand and Australia but also in the US, Europe and Asia. Much of this is thanks to you guys, the fans, for spreading the word. Big ups in particular to Wakarua for hollering at illRoots and Bobby Generik for giving DJ Semtex the heads up.

Speaking of the MTV Snowjam, Leonie Hayden from the Groove Guide caught up with Dave after his “trip” in/to Methven to discuss what he’s been up to and his thoughts on the upcoming MTV Snowjam. The interview was published in the Groove Guide last week and Leonie kindly sent us a copy that we could slap up on the blog here for your convenience.

The 2 Rappers & A DJ Tour with P-Money, PNC and David Dallas has been on the road since mid-June and the boys only have a couple of dates left. They played in Ashburton last night, Methven the night before which according to David he’d “never even heard of before.” I’m told that any interesting shenanigans may have to be left ‘off the record’ but they’re having a good time.

Groove Guide: Your new album is called Something Awesome. Take you long to think of the name?
David Dallas: The name came to me last year. I’d just put a verse on the start of that Mint Chicks song ‘Crazy? Yes! Dumb? No!’ ‘cos I like the drums at the start, so I just looped them up and rapped over it. I went to put it on my MySpace and for ‘album’ I just wanted to put something really generic so I put ‘Something Awesome’ so that it would come up ‘David Dallas − Something Awesome’. I was looking at that and thought, “That would be a cool album name, I think I’ll just call my album that.” It just cracked me up.

Are Frontline just on a break, or have you professionally split?
It’s weird ‘cos 41 (Frontline producer Nick Maclaren) has had a massive hand in my new album but he’s just started a family, just had his first baby and he was never really into the artist side of it anyway. He didn’t like doing videos or anything, he likes the studio and he likes making the music. So he was always like, “I reckon we should just do your album and put you out and I can just make the music.”

Who else you got guesting on the album?
I kind of don’t wanna put too many names out there but PNC’s on there, obviously. Fire & Ice, who did a lot of work on Rookie Card and Scribble’s album. 41 has pretty much recorded the majority of it and even the stuff he hasn’t done the beats on he’s had quite a big hand in. A lot of the engineering and mixing I’ve been doing with Evan from Concord Dawn and P-Money. They’ve got a studio together at the moment so I’m doing a lot of stuff with them. I just did a remix of my song ‘Get Out The Way’ that features Tech Swift from R.E.S.

What’s changed for you now you’ve gone solo?
At the moment not too much just because the records not out yet. Nothing’s really changed as far as how I go about making music either. I guess it is kind of freeing… because you don’t have to worry about any other person’s ideas, because it’s only reflecting on me. I felt like with the last Frontline record I really put so much thought into it. I was like, “Oh this is really important, I might never get to say anything again so I’ll try and say everything I need to say
right here.” I really felt like I wrote that to death almost, whereas with this stuff, because it’s just me I was real free with it. Like the album title, it’s something I didn’t put much thought into but I ran with it straight away, because I’m like “Nah, I like it and it’s my album.” I’d prefer [this] album to just be a reflection of me at that time as opposed to being this definitive statement of myself forever.

You’ve gone back to recording under your real name. Is there any difference on wax between David Dallas and Con Psy?
I don’t think so but it’s just the growth of an artist. Like when we did our first EP I was just learning about how to make music and when it came to making Borrowed Time I was like, I
kind of know what I’m doing now. It felt like I’d got it sussed, but it still felt like I was trying really hard. But with this stuff, I’m definitely more comfortable with myself as a person and as an artist.

You’re going to be heading back to Methven next month, with P-Money and PNC , for the MTV Snow Jam. Any thoughts on the latest additions to the line-up ie Lil Jon and Fat Joe?
It’s sick aye, I’m stoked. It’s gon’ be real good. They’ll be awesome to see live.

You got any skills on the slopes?
Have I got any skills? [laughs] Na, I went snowboarding for the first time when we played in Ohakune. I went up there two days before these guys came up and had a turn on the slopes. It was a choice one, I really liked it. I’m keen to have another go when we come back for Snow Jam.

P-Money featuring David Dallas & PNC – Get Back (41 Remix)

Apart from 41, these are the two fellows I’ve worked with most throughout my career. Quite fitting to be posting this now as the tour we’re currently on has felt something like a 2008 version of the tour we did for P Money’s Magic City album. “Get Back” is from that album and was the first song PNC and I collaborated on, as evidenced it would not be the last (we’ve got another one in the can for Something Awesome).

I recall picking the beat and thinking maybe we could do something cool with it. But when PNC wrote the first verse and brought round the demo it was on like Donkey Kong. We came up with the chorus in my bedroom in Paps, straight joking really – but we were like who cares, it’s hardcase. I thought when we took it to Pete he might fall back on it due to the excessive swearing.. but no. Subsequently that was that, and we’d go on to record the 321 remix a week or 2 later. Mean as.

Apologies for my extreme slackness with this update, I’ve been doing the hard yards at summer school this week. The Sneaker Pimps show and afterparty was lots of fun, Dave rocked it! Big ups to Rimoni for the above photo, there’s more at his blog Clickclickclickclick including one of me flashing my imaginary grills and Elz wondering where the gold at. I think Rimoni has held a few photos back for Back2Basics so expect to see them in the January issue.

Not much left of the year, we’re heading down to Gizzy just before New Years and hope to see some of you there. Stay tuned ‘cos next year we got some awesome shit coming up on this blog…

Dave’s gonna be headlining the Sneaker Pimps official afterparty at The Met on 7 December. Support on the night includes Louie Knuxx and myself, Penfold and Manchoo on the ones and twos.

From Sole Jam!:

It’s going to go down @ The Met Bar, starting at 11PM on the corner of Shortland & High St right in the heart of Auckland city. Featuring a big performance by David Dallas (Con Psy) of Frontline, supported by Louie Knuxx, and with DJs Manchoo, Mouli, and Penfold spinning the wheels of steel all night long in the biggest sneaker party/event of the year.

We might have some last-minute additions to the line-up so stay updated here…

Remember, it’s FREE ENTRY with a Sneaker Pimps pass, otherwise $10 at the door if you can’t make it to the show earlier on at Qubic.

As for dress code – wear your best sneakers. Yes, caps are allowed. Nuff said.

NaS shows postponed

Unfortunately the Nas shows that Dave was scheduled to perform at have been postponed till next year

From the Australian Promoters “That’s Broadway”:
We are rescheduling the Nas tour for late April/May ‘08. Def Jam has made a request to us to reschedule the Nov ‘07 dates to late April/May ‘08 due to pushing forward Nas album to December. We all agreed to the rescheduling as of Wednesday. I have advised the venues and ticketing outlets in Australia of the situation and today I am on the phone to NZ.

Bassline

Dave performed at Bassline last night, it was a good night and we got to catch up with the bro’s from Nesian Mystik who are heading over to Japan soon to be international superstars

Bassline is a live music TV show on Maori TV that will be launching early next year (mid-January I think), Dave’s performance will probably air about March, I’ll post up the date on the blog when I do know for sure. One of the production crew told me that Bassline will air after Homai Te Paki Paki which is one of my favourite TV shows and is the highest rating on Maori TV, whoa, big things are coming…
