For many in Auckland, being a fan of “urban” music ain’t easy. Sometimes you don’t want to go to a club and hear guys who sound like robots harping on about Patron and shawtys ALL night. Alternatively,  it can be hard to actually have a good time and stay awake through a whole night of obscure conscious raps over some jazz loops. All things in moderation they say – so for the people that can appreciate Slum Village AND Snoop Dogg, people who like D’Angelo who don’t hate every song that’s on the Radio or TV, or people who wanna hear the new shit they just downloaded off Nah Right in a club – once every month, we’re gonna try and do something Mean.

Shucks… we might even play a 2Pac song that ISN’T “How Do You Want It” or “California Love”.

First things first, I’d like to wish all you folk a Merry Xmas/Happy New Year and also a safe holiday season. Have fun, don’t do dumb shit and we’ll all be fine. Secondly whether you just discovered my music/the site recently or you’ve been holdin it down here since we started – much thanks. I appreciate your support and the fact that we’re making a little community here. It’s awesome hearing from you guys and as I’ve said before it’s encouraged me knowing that there’s people actually interested in what I’m doing. That’s mint – props to ya’s.

Reflectin on my 09, it was a pretty dece year – much better than my 08 was that’s for sure,  fingers crossed the upward trend continues next year. Personal highlight was puttin out an album I was totally happy with, from the music itself, to the singles we released, to the vids/artwork etc…  it’s the most satisfied I’ve been with any project I’ve worked on. Much thanks go to my team for helping me do that, shot guys.  Doin my first shows in the U.S, and finally crackin into those U.S sites I read everyday was also massive for me(of course the Kanye thing). Still guts about the cloud of death that seemed to hang over the last 12 months though… but what can ya do. Just remember to enjoy your time with your loved ones, 09 was the biggest reminder to not take that shit for granted so I’m mad grateful that I get to spend another xmas with my old man. R.I.P to all those we’ve lost.

Looking forward, I had a realisation this week that I’m gonna have to get fucken BUSY through January if I’m gonna be able to do the things I’ve got planned for next year. I’m sure I’ll get some semblance of a Summer break in, but writing and recording is gonna be the main agenda for the start of 010.  Let me know what you guys wanna see/know about behind the scenes and I’ll see if I can hook up some footage/photos whatever.. shit maybe we’ll even get on our uStream shit and  broadcast a session or somethin ?? Whatevs!  T-Shirts are coming too, I hope you guys are down to buy them/rock them cause if you weren’t .. that would be pretty shit. Ha.

Gigs wise you catch me in Gisborne on the 1st @ those rawkus as BW Campgrounds, and @ Matakana Island on the 16th. I’ll also probably pop into the BDO to catch my bro PNC’s set, and to see The Temper Trap play “Sweet Disposition” – I love that shit. I wanna put on our own party like we did with the “Off 2 The States” gig sometime soon too, but more details on that once it’s finalised. Should be a mean summer!

And finally,  “I Get The Feelin” is startin to pick up at Radio and TV now so you guys need to get out there and request/vote for it so we can “Push it to the limit” as Ricky Ross would say. I hear it’s just garnered a daytime add on The Edge, which would make it the first song of mine that’s done that – wicked. Go show your favourite stations love and  put the word in, lets do this so we don’t have to keep hearin bad JR Rotem productions and that rude as Fireflies song. Haha

Hitting Sydney next week for a couple gigs.  On Friday night I’ll be playing at the event pictured above. Stoked that I’m gonna get to see Neil Armstrong -  I’ve been a big fan of his since Che schooled me up on him via some mixtape hand me downs(funnily enough everyone I showed those mixtapes to went on to become big fans also). It needn’t be stressed that this an extremely worthwhile cause, and I’m happy that I’m getting a chance to do something for the people in Samoa. The line-up is dope, so if you’re in town please come down to offer your support to those affected by this tragedy. Make sure you head along to the bro’s event also, I fly out the day before so unfortunately I can’t make it. My Mrs has been reporting from Samoa since last Wednesday, be assured that they need ALL the help they can get. Make it happen peoples.

Oh and for those that asked, my family is safe and well – our village is just outside Apia. Sincerest condolences to everyone who has lost loved ones.

I should be in bed right now as it’s midnight and I needa be at the airport in 6 hours, before I duck out though I wanted to send a massive thanks to everyone that came to my show at Khuja on Friday night. It was the first solo show I’ve headlined since releasing my single, and it was fucken wicked to see you guys you come through and pack it out.

With the weather being terrible and the ANZAC test timing and result not being favourable I was thinking it was gonna put the damper on the turn out. Fortunately that wasn’t the case…. shit was tight. Shouts to the homies, all my old mates from Paps that came through, and to Percieve and Edgar from Numbers for doing their impromptu thing. Shouts to the girls from NZ Next Top Model that came through too. I felt like a bit of a lame cause I’ve never seen the show, so I didn’t know who was who – but everyone else who was there did and they were excited no end.

On another appreciative note, “Indulge Me” is in the top 40 for another week at 37 – thank you to everyone who’s picked it up. Too much! I’m gonna go finish packing now, so anyone in Sydney 2moro nite see you at the Oxford Art Factory.

I’ll be taking off to the U.S this Saturday for SXSW. First stop is Los Angeles where I’ve been gifted the opportunity to showcase at the infamous Viper Room. There’s 2 nightclubs in the world that I would agree to play at without hesitation upon hearing the name, The Viper Room is one of them. I have no good reason for that, apart from the fact that any place Johnny Depp used to own must be the shit. Maximum stannage.

I’d been holding off on announcing this for logistical reasons, as there was a lot of travel stuff to be sorted before it could officially be “on”. However I can now announce that your boy will be showcasing at this year’s South by Southwest conference in Austin, Texas.

For those unfamiliar with it, it’s a huge music/film/interactive conference which takes place over a week in the city of Austin. On the music side, it runs from the Wednesday till the Sunday and has bands from all over the world playing in bars and clubs throughout the city. I think the general perception amongst the N.Z music industry is that it’s an indy rock festival, however once I looked at the list of acts which showcased last year and saw names like: Ice Cube, Kid Cudi, The Ting Ting’s, The Cool Kidz, Wale and so on.. I figured “that sounds like something i could be into”.

Subsequently I submitted the application and my music, paid the application fee and tried not to put too much hope into it. Being that they get like 15,000 applications every year and only invite 800 or so acts, with no proper single or album out my chances seemed rather slim. Fortune smiled upon me however, and the invite popped up in my email late last year. Since then, it’s just been a fucking mare trying to sort out money, flights, accom etc to make the whole thing happen. But more on that later..

This years conference looks like it’ll be the shit, some of the showcasing acts I’m hangin out to see are: Reflection Eternal, 8Ball and MJG, B.o.B, and Pac Div. I’m showcasing on the same bill as Pac Div, Yak Ballz and Foreign Legion so it should be pretty fucken sick bro. Check my schedule below and check me out here:

I’m gonna blog smarter instead of harder (i.e lazier) and link you to Pete’s recap of our weekend over on his blog. What I will add though, is that the folks that came out to the Whakatane show were a friendly bunch indeed. Sam had ventured into the club before the gig started, and came back saying the people were cool and they were all offering to buy him a drank. However I was still unprepared for the general hospitality of the populace. I don’t think I’ve ever been anywhere where I’ve had as many different people utter the phrase “What are you drinking bro ?” followed by the offer to purchase your desired beverage. In fact it got to the point where people we hadn’t even talked to were purchasing us another bottle of whatever we were holding in our hand – too much bradas. I had the mean time, and we even managed to find our mate Sam sleeping in the communal kitchen of the hotel – after he went missing for an hour. So I assume he had the mean time too.

We’re off to the South Island on Wednesday for 4 dates so that’s gonna be goodtimes/hectic. In the meantime I’m sitting here making beats for a lil project I’m working on (yeah bro) and trying to get this “Get Out The Way” vid wrapped before we have to cruise. I also learnt to play “On The Hotline” by Pretty Ricky on the keys this morning, so it’s safe to say I’m stylin on em. Fully.

I’m way overdue for the obligatory post about how amazing the Tour has been going, and how you totally have to check it out when it hits your town or you’re missing out big time.. BUT – the tour actually HAS been fucken mean, and to be honest you probably ARE missing out if you don’t come through. We did the Auckland show on the weekend just been, and it has to be said of all the shows on the tour it was the one I wanted to do least.

Fortunately for me Aucks decided to flip my pre-conceptions on their head, and gave us the best club show I can remember having in this town in a long long time. Turn out was massive and the crowd was really responsive, which is pretty out of character, at least for Auckland hip hop events. So I’m gonna be bold and put that down to the Drum and Bass massive in attendance. Either way, Auckland you did us proud. Wellington and Napier this weekend hopefully we’ll see some of you there. Choice.

Apologies for my extreme slackness with this update, I’ve been doing the hard yards at summer school this week. The Sneaker Pimps show and afterparty was lots of fun, Dave rocked it! Big ups to Rimoni for the above photo, there’s more at his blog Clickclickclickclick including one of me flashing my imaginary grills and Elz wondering where the gold at. I think Rimoni has held a few photos back for Back2Basics so expect to see them in the January issue.

Not much left of the year, we’re heading down to Gizzy just before New Years and hope to see some of you there. Stay tuned ‘cos next year we got some awesome shit coming up on this blog…

Dave’s gonna be headlining the Sneaker Pimps official afterparty at The Met on 7 December. Support on the night includes Louie Knuxx and myself, Penfold and Manchoo on the ones and twos.

It’s going to go down @ The Met Bar, starting at 11PM on the corner of Shortland & High St right in the heart of Auckland city. Featuring a big performance by David Dallas (Con Psy) of Frontline, supported by Louie Knuxx, and with DJs Manchoo, Mouli, and Penfold spinning the wheels of steel all night long in the biggest sneaker party/event of the year.

We might have some last-minute additions to the line-up so stay updated here…

Remember, it’s FREE ENTRY with a Sneaker Pimps pass, otherwise $10 at the door if you can’t make it to the show earlier on at Qubic.

As for dress code – wear your best sneakers. Yes, caps are allowed. Nuff said.

Unfortunately the Nas shows that Dave was scheduled to perform at have been postponed till next year

From the Australian Promoters “That’s Broadway”:
We are rescheduling the Nas tour for late April/May ‘08. Def Jam has made a request to us to reschedule the Nov ‘07 dates to late April/May ‘08 due to pushing forward Nas album to December. We all agreed to the rescheduling as of Wednesday. I have advised the venues and ticketing outlets in Australia of the situation and today I am on the phone to NZ.

Dave performed at Bassline last night, it was a good night and we got to catch up with the bro’s from Nesian Mystik who are heading over to Japan soon to be international superstars

Bassline is a live music TV show on Maori TV that will be launching early next year (mid-January I think), Dave’s performance will probably air about March, I’ll post up the date on the blog when I do know for sure. One of the production crew told me that Bassline will air after Homai Te Paki Paki which is one of my favourite TV shows and is the highest rating on Maori TV, whoa, big things are coming…

So Dave had his first headline gig under his new stage name of David Dallas at Fu this past weekend. Dave performed a selection of new joints and freestyles to a moderately busy club (why front?) with a great response from the crowd. His set included Big Time, All On My Own, an impromptu performance of Who Better Than This? Remix with PNC, Get Out Da Way, Indulge Me and a bunch of mixtape freestyles over Can’t Tell Me Nothing, All About the Benji’s and Umbrella (check for the mixtape soon – ie. hurry up Dave!).

We stuck around and got on the turps for a bit, Dave jetted a lil’ early and I ended up getting wasted then krumping and bouncing across Fu like a Kangaroo, no doubt that shit looked funny as fuck being that I was wearing my tourist-as fluroscent Panda t-shirt, haha. Big ups to the crew who came down to show support and party up – cheers to Katy for all the drinks, Cookie, PNC, Ailsa, Rohan, DForm, Dverdict, Jeff from the Wiggles, Joey Turksta, Molly and apologies for anyone I forgot. Also cheers to Rui-san for the photos, cheers dawg. Arigato gozaimashta to DJCXL-sama and thanks to Gareth and Dan at Fu for putting on a good night, chizur!
