Life is a funny beast. Sometimes you’re up, sometimes you’re down. The worst day ever can be salvaged by a tidbit of good news, alternatively everything can be going swell then come crashing down in an instant.

Regardless, we all look to tomorrow with some hope that it might be better than the day before it.

Jordache from Fire & Ice had been looping up this Ratatat song(“Loud Pipes”) when I was over his house to pick up some beats. I wasn’t familiar with the song prior, but I dug it straight away. I don’t really know why but it reminded me of Dead Prez “Hip Hop”. After picking out some actual beats I still had some space on a CD, so I told him to chuck that ‘Ratatat loop’ on the disc and rolled out. Couple months later when I should have been working on an actual project, ‘Ratatat loop’ popped up on my iTunes and in trademark fashion I procrastinated on doing what I was supposed to and wrote this.

I’ve written a bunch of new stuff in the last fortnight and I also picked up some new gadgets recently so some in studio uStream action shall be taking place very soon – I actually thought we were gonna do some stuff today but our engineer’s computer has contracted some infections. Fuck viruses.

I love this shit!

P-Money told me he’d hooked up this blend for a guest mix on MistaJams show in the U.K. When he mentioned he’d taken the “Indulge Me” acapella and hooked it up with a Duck Sauce song I was intrigued as I’ve had “aNYway” on repeat over the last 2 months… but damn, this shit right here?!? killer. A lot of the time blends don’t really float my boat, cause often dudes will just match tempos without considerin the vibe or the key of the song. This one really works for me though, props to Mr Money.

For the uninformed, Duck Sauce is a collaboration between A-Trak and Armand Van Helden. The tunes they’ve put out thus far(like the aforementioned “aNYway” ) have been pretty fucken choice so I suggest you hunt them down. Great way to amp up your house party sets on the ipod.

It’s official – like a referee with a whistle.

Even though I’ve stated the date before, nothing cements it in my mind like seeing it on  the poster image. Fucken choice.

If you do your thing on the internet and are keen to be helpful/awesome feel free to post that image or rock this banner around the place. I often encounter gracious people who are keen to help out just cause they’re feelin the music, and in truth I don’t really have much for anyone to do. When it comes to this music shit it’s a fairly solitary affair, I just write some stuff in my room and hopefully people like it.

The only thing I’ll ever ask is if you like what I do, tell someone about it. Whether it be you showing a song to someone who might like it, a request on a radio station, a comment on a forum – your word is everything.

The “Big Time” vid has been poppin up all over the place, and over the last week has been featured on some rather awesome U.S sites. Of particular significance to me was a write up on The Smoking Section – significant as it’s my favourite hip hop site, and it’s been my daily read for going on 3 years.

Equally significant was a write up by Damian Randle on FWMJ’s RappersIknow. RappersIknow is Houston based and part of the Okayplayer blog network, and Damian is one of the MC’s from reknowned hip hop group K-Otix. Me and my boy A-rza had their album Universal on heavy rotate round 02 so it was a fucken trip to find out the dude had actually seen my show at SXSW and enjoyed it.

MAD thanks to everyone who’s taken the time to link up the vid, tried to put someone else onto it, or just spread the word in general. We ain’t dealing with international budgets over here, so word of mouth is the only tool we’ve got. Good thing it’s also the most vital.

“Eyes Wide Open” was conceived during the early writing stages for Something Awesome. A lot of the work FortyOne and I did around this time would eventually go on to become the Something Now EP, and I’d intended for this to be on there too. When it came time to finalise the EP however, I felt the vibe of this song didn’t sit with the rest so it was left off. I subsequently lost the drive it was on, and the song was left in limbo – possibly to never be heard from again.  Luckily I’d given Pete all the demos I had early last year, and when asked he was able to dig it up from his laptop archives.

Far as the song goes, I figure the lyrics are self explanatory. I always dug this beat because it made me think of some dark  Murda Muzik era Mobb Deep. For anyone that was wondering what happened to that moody Frontline sound, here ya go.

Okay guys, this is the important one right here. Most of you guys have followed my stuff since I was in Frontline, so you’re probably aware that as a group, Nick and I didn’t really make the most radio friendly songs – lol. Subesequently we never used to get much love on the radio, with the majority of our airplay coming from music vids on TV.

“Indulge Me” is a different story though, and it’s probably the first song I’ve put out that could really work on radio, BUT …. I need your help (ya know, like I said earlier). So what we need to do is hit up your favourite radio stations and call/text/email them to request it.  Because it does make the difference. Wow, this buzzed me out! Che texted me today and alerted me to the fact that “Indulge Me” was #9 on iTunes hip hop singles chart. He’d also discovered that the Something Now E.P was #1 on the hip hop albums chart and #8 on the overall album chart. That’s crazy! For a project that had zero airplay on TV/Radio and no promo, it’s mean as to see it even registering on those charts. Too much guys, thank you for picking it up and spreading the word cause I know for a fact noone would know about this E.P otherwise. Shot!

Ha, this one cracks me up. PNC put the idea of doing this to me for his mixtape and gave me the instrumental, so how could I say no ? Bone Thugs were inescapable in my youth, even people who hated them knew their songs. So it was fun coming up with the rhymes and trying to flip it in their style. Season 2 of Code Geass has started and it has successfully filled the void it left in my life after season 1 stopped airing and Deathnote finished. I just finished watching episode 3 and I’m already hanging out for next week’s torrent. It’s times like this I realise I fucken love the internet. Not only is it amazing that I get to watch a show that aired in Japan within hours of it being shown, but the fact that there’s some dedicated people out there that actually go through the show, translate and subtitle all the dialogue, all visual language references (like signposts etc), and make it look all pretty. Just so I can click on a link and watch it at my leisure in the comfort of my own home, ad-free – that’s too ill. Fansubbing is the shit.

Anyways back to Code Geass – I was real stoked on this song they used in the ending credits of Season 1 primarily cause I liked the break at the start. I did some research online and found it was by a group called Sunset Swish and the tracks called “Mosaic Kakera”. Found the video on youtube, watched it for a bit then figured I’d sample some shit and hook it up on Fruity Loops. Again, one of those I love the internet moments. Hear a song on a cartoon > find out who it’s by > get the song > sample it – all in under 40 minutes. This chain of events was impossible back in the day – that’s too ill. Internet is the shit.

Apart from 41, these are the two fellows I’ve worked with most throughout my career. Quite fitting to be posting this now as the tour we’re currently on has felt something like a 2008 version of the tour we did for P Money’s Magic City album. “Get Back” is from that album and was the first song PNC and I collaborated on, as evidenced it would not be the last (we’ve got another one in the can for Something Awesome).

I recall picking the beat and thinking maybe we could do something cool with it. But when PNC wrote the first verse and brought round the demo it was on like Donkey Kong. We came up with the chorus in my bedroom in Paps, straight joking really – but we were like who cares, it’s hardcase. I thought when we took it to Pete he might fall back on it due to the excessive swearing.. but no. Subsequently that was that, and we’d go on to record the 321 remix a week or 2 later. Mean as.

“We ain’t done” was one of my favourite songs on Borrowed Time. It’s a song I felt people never actually got though – if you know what I mean. I have a habit of liking tracks that have an unorthodox pattern or timing to them, whether it’s the way the drums are programmed or whatever. I think I just like coming up with flows and rhymes to match or ride them. The sorta stuff you can’t just grab the acapella of and throw over any beat with the same tempo.

Anyways, this remix here I think Nick intended to be sorta comedic – I actually like it though. The beat sorta reminds me of “PN-Whoa” and contrary to what I was saying above it gives the song a more conventional feel timing wise i.e not so stop-start. Ha I confuse myself trying to explain this shit. Check it out.

I dont know if this is a remix in the strictest sense of the word, being that Nick has just titled the file as ‘Routineblend’ but whatever. The beat is different and that’s all that you need to know really – ha. Anyways, “Routine” is another song off the Borrowed Time album, I recall it being our engineer Steve’s favourite of the bunch when we were mixing the album at York St. I originally intended it to be kinda like an online exclusive type thing. Just a song that we could put up on the net and give away that wouldnt be on the album, so I pretty much wrote the whole song in one sitting and went and recorded it the next day. As it usually goes with that sort of thing, we were really happy with it once we recorded and heard it back so that pretty much sealed the deal and on the album it went. Shotty.

Somewhat interesting fact about this one, is that it’s the first song we completed for the album. We demo’d a few other tracks after the release of What you expect but they all sucked, wasn’t till we got this one down that I felt like we were on the right track. I recall writing this around the same time as I was writing a lot of the Magic City stuff, and I remember writing the lyrics was stressing me out. Took me some time but we got there in the end, ha. Ok, lets do this. I thought this track would be an appropriate one to start on being that it’s a remix of the intro to What you expect – our first release.

I rarely listen to any of my stuff once it’s out, and generally after a couple of months or so of not hearing it, when I do hear it I’m cringing and looking for the off button. This one was particularly buzzy cause I dont think I’ve heard these raps in a couple years, it’s almost like I’m listening to someone else. Definitely reminds me of some good times though – I recall writing/recording these in a blazing hot bedroom under some stairs with an sm58 and a pantyhose pop filter. Cracked copy of Cool Edit of course. Ended up re-recording them after Nick copped Pro Tools and I saved up enough money for a Rode NT1000 though. We didnt really know how to use anything – but we were stoked to be making songs – and that’s what it’s all about aint it ?

Had a talk to Nick(41) about putting up some never heard before Frontline remixes on the podcast. Nick’s pretty prolific with the beats so in his stash he’s got all kinds of stuff floating around from the What you expect and Borrowed Time albums, and PNC’s Rookie Card too. There’s some straight comedy in there, and also some real mean stuff. We’ll see how we go and hopefully we can bring some of it to the light for you guys to listen to. Stay tuned.

We’re bombarded with new music nowadays. I in fact dedicate the start of my day to gettin on the computer and checkin out all my regular blogs/forums for whatever new shit has dropped, new album leaked, new mixtape, new remix, new videos etc.. whatever, its all good.However I often wonder whether some of the songs and albums I discovered in the past which I love to this day would have slipped straight past me if they were to come out in this day in age. Albums like Mobb Deep ‘Hell on Earth’ might not have gotten past the initial ‘fuck this is pretty dark’ phase and might have gone straight to the recycle bin with the new Rich Boy album. Back then after I’d jus dropped 30 bucks, I knew I wouldnt be gettin no new music till Christmas or next Birthday(whichever came first). Hence there was no option but to throw that shit back in the CD player and bump it till I loved it.

And I feel enriched for that.

I often wonder with our increased fickleness and this digital revolution seemingly shifting us back to a single’s only world, whether we’re losing the concept of a ‘grower’. Albums and songs that you may not fully get on the first listen, but given the chance and the repeat plays they seem to become better and better. Whilst the whizz bang single you thought was the shit the first time round gets old real quick. Its interesting and Im not all too sure how I feel about it.

However this brings me to the point of this post; the first listen. That key point when you establish whether something is good, shit, or alright. Speakin for myself, the first listen is more important than ever. Being that I’m such a fickle cunt its extremely rare for me to hear something brand new and be like ‘wow.. that was the shit’. Songs that really kick your ass only come along once in a while, so when one does.. you gotta give it its propers. For me The Klaxons – ‘Golden Skans’ was one such song, anyone who’s visited my myspace will know I was so fond of it I even rapped on it.

I was fortunate enough to get sent a cover version of the song performed by a Mr Daniel Merriweather who you may have heard on that Mark Ronson – ‘Stop Me’ (Smiths cover) song which is killing shit right now. I loved this cover on first listen and am still lovin it, it also did the good deed of reminding me just how much I like the original, now thats some beautiful shit.
