I’d actually had the idea of rapping over some 90′s New York stuff for a while, but it wasn’t till around mid last year when I saw Marco Polo’s video for Nostalgia that I thought ‘fuck it’ and went ahead and did it. I was just psyched on everything about it – chopped up sample, boom bap drums, Masta Ace on the verses, scratch chorus, and a basic as video of a dude just rhyming. It reminded me of the vids/songs I grew up watching on Trueschool(MaxTV). I used to tape them, then play them back over and over till I had to get the ‘head cleaner’ tape out because the picture on the VCR was looking all fucked up.

Anyways, I’ve got heaps of old instrumental versions of songs that I used to download to rap on. I used to get on Soulseek pretty much every night, search for ‘instrumental’ and download anything that looked like rap. Back in the 56k days this shit took AGES! but over time I built up a pretty big collection. So for this I pulled out the old archives for the first time since back then and just started comin up with raps for some of my favourites.

I recorded this stuff with Nick here and there, just whenever we had some spare time between doing songs for my album. I didn’t wanna worry ’bout song structure or ‘flipping’ the song on some mixtape shit or anything like that, I just wanted to rap – cause it’s fun. So you wont hear no stacked vocals with 4 layers of BV’s and special effects, it’s all pretty much just a first take with a double. Straight rapping – a back to basics approach if you will. Big thanks to Che and Truent for taking a bunch of verses over old songs and turning it into something that makes sense, and to Substance for putting the whole thing together. Mean as my bros.

How to get it

The mixtape will be released as a series of free downloads through this website. Beginning next week we’ll release one track every Monday, Wednesday and Friday which will continue over the next few weeks. The 12th and final track will be an exclusive new song from my upcoming album ‘Something Awesome’. We’ve also created a podcast that you can subscribe to so that the new tracks are delivered direct to your computer as they are released. This is the SHIT if you use Itunes and you like automating things to make your life easier. Che’s created a help page for those of you that are unfamiliar with podcasting, click here to read it.

Dave’s gonna be headlining the Sneaker Pimps official afterparty at The Met on 7 December. Support on the night includes Louie Knuxx and myself, Penfold and Manchoo on the ones and twos.

It’s going to go down @ The Met Bar, starting at 11PM on the corner of Shortland & High St right in the heart of Auckland city. Featuring a big performance by David Dallas (Con Psy) of Frontline, supported by Louie Knuxx, and with DJs Manchoo, Mouli, and Penfold spinning the wheels of steel all night long in the biggest sneaker party/event of the year.

We might have some last-minute additions to the line-up so stay updated here…

Remember, it’s FREE ENTRY with a Sneaker Pimps pass, otherwise $10 at the door if you can’t make it to the show earlier on at Qubic.
